From July 5 to 7, 2023, the core expert team of the Else Kroener Cancer Care (EKCC) project gathered at Haile Grand Hotel in Addis Ababa for a three-day replanning meeting. Led by project manager Prof. Adamu Addissie, the team consisting of members from Addis Ababa University, Churchill Health Center, and the EKCC team evaluated the project's progress over the past two and a half years and strategized for the remaining duration. The meeting focused on assessing achievements, addressing challenges, refining strategies, and setting goals for the project. Discussions centered on important steps for cancer prevention, including cancer awareness training, organizational structure adjustments, and improving training in rural health centers. The retreat facilitated collaboration and the development of new ideas and solutions to enhance cancer care in Ethiopia.

During the replanning retreat, the team reviewed the implemented projects after a successful mid-term evaluation and discussed strategies for strengthening and consolidating cancer care from 2023 to 2026. Led by Prof. Adamu Addissie, the project manager, surgeons, doctors, and public health specialists worked together to identify and concretize key steps for cancer prevention in the remaining 2.5 years. The retreat included presentations from the project managers from Germany, Prof. Eva Kantelhardt and Dr. Antje Henke, who discussed upcoming work packages such as cancer awareness training and improving organizational structures. The intensive exchange and collaborative efforts during the retreat fostered the development of new ideas and solutions.

Overall, these meetings served as vital milestones for the EKCC project, providing an opportunity to evaluate progress, plan for the future, and consolidate efforts in improving cancer care in Ethiopia. The collaboration between the Ethiopian and German colleagues demonstrated their commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and implementing targeted interventions to address breast and cervical cancer in the country.
